Hiring LatAm developers
Hiring developers in Latin America usually takes four to six weeks end to end, costs 40% to 60% less than equivalent US hires, and works through one of three models: direct contracting, an employer of record, or staff augmentation through a partner that already holds the contracts.
Time zones are the real advantage
Argentina, Chile and Uruguay sit one to two hours ahead of US Eastern time; Colombia, Peru and Mexico sit at or behind it. In practice that means a full overlapping working day, live code review and same-day incident response — the thing offshore models in Asia or Eastern Europe cannot offer a US team.
Three contracting models
Direct contracting is the cheapest per head and the heaviest administratively: you sign with the professional as an independent contractor and manage invoicing, tax forms and currency yourself.
An employer of record adds a legal employer in the country, useful when you need employment benefits and local compliance but still want the hire on your org chart.
Staff augmentation through a recruiting partner folds sourcing, evaluation, contracting and payroll into a single monthly fee, which is why most teams hiring their first two or three LatAm professionals start there.
Realistic budget and timeline
For a senior backend engineer, expect a total monthly cost roughly 40% to 60% below an equivalent US hire, with the gap narrowing for scarce AI and platform specialists. Time to first shortlist is one to two weeks; offer to start date is another two to four, since most LatAm professionals give a fifteen to thirty day notice.
What to screen for
Technical depth is table stakes. The differentiators in a distributed team are written English, autonomy when the manager is offline, and the habit of raising blockers early. Ask for evidence of all three during the interview instead of assuming them from a CV.
